STEM in Action:

Become a NASA GLOBE Citizen Scientist

4th & 5th grade – middle school

This signature program is unique to Camp Discovery as a NASA GLOBE Goes to Camp Model Site. Participants will be actively involved in supporting NASA missions by utilizing NASA GLOBE protocols to collect surface temperature data and make cloud observations. The relationship between these factors will be examined. Students will determine ways to mitigate the urban heat island effect.

standards

This program uses Science and Engineering Practices aligned with the South Carolina College and Career Ready Science Standards. It is adjusted to meet the needs of various grade levels.

Habitat Hunt:

Exploring Organisms in their Environment

Pre-K – 3rd Grade

Using our senses, we embark upon habitats large and small within various ecosystems. From seeds to deer tracks, students will discover what plants and animals live in our various habitats and explore how their basic needs are met in these unique environments.

Friends of the Forest:

Observation, Investigation, and Measurement of Trees

2nd & 5th grade

Students will go deep into our deciduous forest to explore this important natural resource. We will observe the life cycle of trees, explore a tree’s climate history, and discover indicators of a tree’s health. Older students will measure tree height as citizen scientists, collecting data for the NASA GLOBE Program.

Erosion Rocks!

2nd Grade & 5th Grade  – Middle school

Erosion Rocks takes students on an in-depth look at the forces that shape our planet. We will explore different types of weathering and investigate erosion. Students will design and create a model to reduce stream erosion. On a hike through our forests, creeks, wetlands, and meadows, students will discover examples of weathering and erosion while completing a scavenger hunt.

standards

Erosion Rocks! was designed to address erosion standards starting in second grade and continuing into fourth grade. The program can also be altered for more advanced learners in middle school.
2-ESS1-1, ESS1.C, 2-ESS2-1. ESS2.A:, ETS1.C: ETS2.B
